Two-tier pricing riles flat buyers   


Buyers of flats in a housing project being built in Kwai Chung protested outside developer Cheung Kong's sales office in Hung Hom yesterday, complaining that it had misled them over the prices.


Protest organiser Stanley Lau said at least 55 people bought pre-sale flats at The Apex in Kwai Chung in March last year, before later buyers were offered discounts. The two-tower, 50-storey project will comprise 924 flats and is expected to be completed this year.

Cheung Kong and estate agents said prices wouldn't go down and urged us to buy before it was too late. They said we could enjoy a discounted rate only if we bought the flats in March last year, Mr Lau said.

But a series of bigger discounts were introduced later to boost sales. Price lists or sales brochures were also not provided for flat buyers, he said during the protest at the Metropolis mall.

Mr Lau said promotional material claimed the project was in Kowloon, when it was in the New Territories.

The affected flat owners have already filed a complaint to the Estate Agents Authority.

I have learned that the authority has set up an independent committee, Mr Lau said.

Another property owner said he purchased a flat of 663 sq ft for HK$2.7 million in March last year.

No price list was given to me, he said. They just told us about flat prices verbally. Nothing written was presented to me. Since most of us were first-time flat buyers, we trusted them. But then the company introduced many more discounts for later buyers. It was really unfair to us.
